The laboratory inherits its tradition from the "Laboratoire de Spectrométrie Physique" created in 1966 by M. Soutif on the new University Campus. Its seven research teams explore the frontiers of physics with a number of different research fields, from biology to climate sciences and engineering, using the three branches of modern physics : experimental, computational and theoretical.

WIth about 55 faculty members and CNRS researchers, supported by a technical staff of more than 30, and funding from a large variety of sources, the laboratory offers excellent facilities for the training of students and postdoctoral researchers, in a very international and cooperative atmosphere.
